MUSICAL REVIEW | DISNEY ALADDIN HIT BROADWAY MUSICAL IN SINGAPORE MARINA BAY SANDS “Very Entertaining, A Whole New World !”

Aladdin (1)

The Broadway sensation Aladdin makes its Singapore premiere at Marina Bay Sands, with performances beginning on July 21, 2019. This English-language production will play its first and only Asian stop at Sands Theatre. So is this musical worth watching?

Firstly, let us talk about the sets, it is boasting the most lavish sets and spectacular costumes ever to be seen on the Sands Theatre stage. This spectacular production boasts a cast of 34 and a staggering 337 glittering costumes, which feature 1,225 different fabrics, 712 different styles of beads and almost 500,000 Swarovski crystals. 40 tonnes of exotic flying scenery and 60 tonnes of automation and staging will be transferred to Singapore in more than 30, 40’ sea containers to recreate the fantasy city of Agrabah including the colourful marketplace, the lush palace of the Sultan and his princess daughter Jasmine and the legendary Cave of Wonders.

What about the story?

Based on the Academy Award®- winning animated film, Aladdin, the musical made its world premiere to critical acclaim at Broadway’s New Amsterdam Theatre on March 20th, 2014. It quickly established itself as one of the biggest new blockbusters in recent years, breaking 14 New Amsterdam Theatre house records and welcoming close to 10 million people worldwide.

One of the main attraction for this musical is the songs. This musical featured songs from the Academy Award-winning film including ‘ Friend Like Me’, ‘ A Whole New World’ and ‘Arabian Night’.

Headlined by the talented Graeme Isaako as Aladdin, Shubshri Kandiah as Jasmine and the flamboyant Gareth Jacobs as Genie, this production is entertaining and exciting without a single dull moment.

Some special effects also incorporated into this production, especially when the Genie first appear, the Palace scene and the Flying Carpet scene. Aladdin and Jasmine soar in a suspended carpet against a dreamy star-filled night sky while singing “A Whole New World.” It is a memorable scene and a highlight of the entire show.

What is the verdict?

Even if you feel you know the story too well and have seen some version of Aladdin before, we still recommend you watch it. There will be lots of surprises, singing and effects. Plus it is a very entertaining and fast-paced musical, not a single dull moment.

Now playing until Sept 1 only! Great seats available on mid-weeks and Sunday evenings.
