The Eastern & Oriental Hotel is a hotel of old, colonial charm with the finest traditions of comfort and service. The property began its colourful history in 1884 as The Eastern. The Oriental was added in 1885 due to the Eastern’s overwhelming popularity. The hotels then combined to become the Eastern & Oriental Hotel. Established by the Armenian Sarkies brothers, Martin and Tigran, they became one Grand Hotel with Moorish minarets, a spacious domed lobby and a sweeping seafront.
The hotel is fully owned and managed by the Eastern & Oriental Berhad Group. After a major refurbishment, the E&O Hotel reopened its doors to the public on Tuesday, 3 April 2001.
Standing majestically along Farquhar Street and intersecting with Penang Road, the E&O Hotel is 20 kilometres from Penang International Airport. Located conveniently near food havens, shopping and entertainment belts of downtown Georgetown, financial district of Beach Street and surrounding cultural quarters, the hotel is again positioned as an exclusive 100 all-suite Grand Hotel, evoking an aura of place and time, maintaining strong historical links and traditions yet coupled with the facilities of present day.
All suites are magnificently furnished, extravagantly spacious and come in eight different types, with either city or sea views. Each suite comes with modern day amenities and every guest who stays at the E&O Hotel receives individual attention. The hotel’s round-the-clock impeccable butler service guarantees that guests’ personal needs and comfort are a constant focus from the moment they arrive. Personalized attentive service standards with old world charm are the hallmark of the E&O Hotel.

Re-opening of its iconic Heritage Wing
The Eastern and Oriental (E&O) Hotel re-opened its Heritage Wing following an extensive refurbishment exercise which began in March 2019. Widely regarded as the grande dame of hospitality in Penang, this milestone event heralds an exciting new chapter in this heritage landmark’s rich legacy.
Maintaining its historical grandeur, key elements such as the echo dome, which has become part of the E&O’s identity is maintained while upgrading works were carried out to offer better hospitality experience for guests.
The newly refurbished suites now feature a brighter concept with more natural light and a softer colour scheme while retaining the signature twin vanities and long bath.
Renowned for its timeless hospitality, the Heritage Wing now provides a more personalised experience with pre-arrival services, in-suite check-in and round-the-clock butler service.
Guests are also entitled to exclusive privileges such as access to The Cornwallis – a private lounge offering breakfast and complimentary evening canapes and cocktails, the Heritage Wing pool as well as in-suite decanters with premium selected beverages and snacks that will be replenished daily.
With the reopening of the Heritage Wing, the hotel is also introducing new culinary experiences as it celebrates both classic and heritage flavours with three new dining outlets – Java Tree, Palm Court and Farquhar’s Bar.
Eastern & Oriental Hotel has played gracious host to the world’s most celebrated artists and writers, members of royalty and heads of state for 135 years. Since its establishment in 1885 as an oasis for early travellers to the East, the E&O remains the only seafront hotel in the George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ideal vantage point from which to explore Penang, one of Malaysia’s most treasured cultural destinations.
The E&O’s iconic Heritage Wing enters a new golden era after a meticulous refurbishment that has reinvigorated her repertoire of exclusive hospitality paired with refined culinary experiences. Along the same stretch of prime seafront lawn, the E&O’s Victory Annexe is styled as a modern classic to complement the adjacent historic property.
