The first edition of Vinexpo Asia-Pacific is set to take place from May 23-25 in Singapore, and the opening gala dinner will be hosted by the wines of Saint-Émilion. The Jurade de Saint-Émilion, a brotherhood of 140 members who passionately share their knowledge of the wines, village, and history with consumers and wine lovers worldwide, will welcome 400 guests to the Flower Field at Gardens by the Bay for a cocktail reception, followed by a 5-course dining experience paired with 12 exceptional wines from the Saint-Émilion region.
The Ritz Carlton has curated the dining experience, which promises to be nothing short of enchanting. Hubert de Boüard, 1st Jurat and co-owner of Saint-Émilion’s Château Angelus, alongside Melvin Choo, Singaporean-born motorsports race driver and chancellor of the Jurade in Singapore, will share the history and significance of the Jurade and present the Jurats on stage. This year’s ceremony will induct 15 personalities by the Jurade of Saint-Émilion.
The wines of Saint-Émilion are a true delight for wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike. With over 900 winegrowers across 7,500 hectares of land, the region is recognized as the first vineyard to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Additionally, 90% of the vineyard is currently committed to environmental certification, and in 2023, the goal is to have 100% of the winegrowers achieve this feat.
The Jurade ceremony is steeped in the rich history of France and represents the proud tradition of the Saint-Émilion region. The Jurisdiction of Saint-Émilion dates back to the 12th century, and when the region fell under English control in 1154, Saint-Émilion aspired to obtain greater independence. This is when the Jurade was born, and for 500 years, the Jurats exerted very wide-ranging authority over eight parishes that made up the Jurisdiction with administrative, legal, financial, and military powers until the French Revolution. In 1948, the Jurade was recreated and stands to represent and celebrate the innovation of its ancestors.
Melvin Choo, Chancellor of the Jurade de Saint-Émilion in Singapore, said, “My passion for wine forged my place in this prestigious brotherhood, and working with Saint-Émilion as the chancellor has allowed me to share the incredible history and exquisite tastes of the wine of Saint-Émilion. I am proud to bring the opening gala event to my home in Singapore and to be able to share this with the growing wine connoisseur community locally who will surely appreciate the fine offerings of Saint-Émilion. We look forward to Singapore being host to future Jurade ceremonies and bringing together the global wine community.”
