Step Inside the Great Pyramid: “Horizon of Khufu” Brings Ancient Egypt to Singapore

For millennia, the Great Pyramid of Giza has captured the human imagination. Towering 146 metres above the Giza plateau, the Pyramid of Khufu remains the only standing monument among the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Now, through advanced virtual reality, Singapore residents and visitors can travel 4,500 years back in time to explore the heart of Old Kingdom Egypt.

Following a debut in Paris in June 2022 and over 250,000 visitors worldwide, “Horizon of Khufu: Journey in Ancient Egypt” opens at GROUNDSEESAW SINGAPORE, located on Level 3 of Parkview Square. Produced by French virtual reality studio Emissive under its Excurio brand, presented by Seoul-based GROUNDSEESAW, and partnered with production company UNQP, the exhibition blends scientific rigor with shared cultural entertainment.

A 4,500-Year Leap into Pharaoh Khufu’s Reign

Constructed between 2,590 and 2,565 BC as the monumental tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, the Great Pyramid contains chambers, shafts, and historical mysteries that have puzzled archaeologists for centuries. While physical visitors to Giza are limited to constricted corridors and steep stairwells, “Horizon of Khufu” leverages VR technology to open spaces previously inaccessible to the general public.

During the 45-minute free-roaming journey, visitors strap into a lightweight VR headset and step straight onto the sands of ancient Giza. The expedition features:

  • An Aerial Flyover: Gliding over the sprawling Giza necropolis in its prime.
  • The Summit Panorama: An effortless ascent to the peak of the 146-metre Pyramid of Khufu, revealing a 360-degree vantage point across the ancient landscape.
  • Sacred Interior Chambers: Wandering through the Queen’s Chamber, narrow ascending corridors, and the innermost burial chambers during an ancient embalming ceremony.
  • A Funeral Voyage along the Nile: Boarding a ceremonial solar boat on the waters of the Nile at twilight to witness the funeral rites of Pharaoh Khufu.

Grounded in Harvard Egyptology Research

Rather than presenting an imagined, Hollywood-style vision of antiquity, “Horizon of Khufu” is built on verified architectural, historical, and archaeological evidence.

The experience was developed through multi-year research conducted in direct partnership with Peter Der Manuelian, Professor of Egyptology at Harvard University and Director of the Giza Project. Manuelian and his team provided architectural data, archaeological scans, and historical findings gathered directly on-site at the Giza plateau. Every hieroglyph, limestone block, architectural elevation, and ritual garment depicted reflects modern scholarship on fourth-dynasty mortuary architecture and daily life.

Shared Virtual Reality Without Isolation

Traditional virtual reality exhibits often confine users to swiveling chairs or small cubicles, resulting in an isolated experience. “Horizon of Khufu” operates on Excurio’s proprietary free-roaming multi-user platform.

Designed for physical venues ranging between 300 and 1,000 square metres, the technology allows large groups of visitors to walk around freely in real space. Crucially, participants can see digital avatars of their accompanying family and friends inside the virtual environment. This social component enables companions to point out details, converse naturally, and share the sensation of discovery as they ascend the monument or navigate underground tunnels together.

For GROUNDSEESAW—the Korean media art brand with over five million visitors worldwide that previously hosted Van Gogh Inside and Monet Inside—this exhibition marks a major step in expanding their flagship Singapore space into high-fidelity historical expeditions.
