Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS comes to the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands for a strictly limited season from December 17.
The story is based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks. It tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the “Jellicle choice”, deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The musical includes the well-known song “Memory” as sung by Grizabella. As of 2019, Cats remains the fourth-longest-running Broadway show and the sixth-longest-running West End show.
It is a song-and-dance spectacular with an imaginative set and amazing make-up, costumes and choreography. We totally enjoyed the costumes and choreography. The cats are outfitted in colourful wigs, body-fitting striped suits and fur collars. The tales are engaging, but some are better executed than others. Moments to look out for in Act 1, the boisterous and libidinous tomcat Rum Tum Tugger, whose hip-shaking moves left females purring with delight. However, the tap dance sequence seems a bit too amateur. Another highlight was when Grizabella (Erin Cornell), a faded glamourpuss, sings the song “Memory”. Trevor Nunn wrote the lyrics for the song, “Memory”, which is based on some of T.S Eliot’s poems. Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music. It was written for the 1981 musical Cats, where it is sung primarily by the character Grizabella as a melancholic remembrance of her glamorous past and as a plea for acceptance. “Memory” is the climax of the musical and by far its best-known song, having achieved mainstream success outside of the musical. According to musicologist Jessica Sternfeld, it is “by some estimations the most successful song ever from a musical.”
Overall, the cast executed Jo-Anne Robinson’s choreography faultlessly, prancing and leaping, and portraying the playfulness of felines.
CATS, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The ground-breaking production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony awards including Best Musical, and ran for 18 years.
Featuring a fantastical oversized set, a superb score, inspired choreography and mischievous costumes, CATS is a brilliant song and dance spectacular not to be missed.
Tickets are now on sale via Marina Bay Sands ticketing and SISTIC.
