WHAT’S HOT SPRING 2018
UK & EUROPE
A WORLD CLASS HOTEL FOR BRITAIN’S MOST HISTORIC UNIVERSITY TOWN
– UNIVERSITY ARMS, CAMBRIDGE TO OPEN IN JUNE 2018 AFTER AN £80 MILLION RESTORATION BY JOHN SIMPSON AND MARTIN BRUDNIZKI
Cambridge has rocketed from backwater to boom town, thanks to its burgeoning high-tech industries. Those Silicon Fen millions may have transformed the city into the UK’s third wealthiest and spawned a Shoreditch-cool culinary scene, with trendy food trucks, but it lacks a hip, A-list place to stay. Next year that anomaly will be spectacularly rectified with the reopening of its landmark hotel, UNIVERSITY ARMS, CAMBRIDGE, after a two-year, £80m renovation by the dream team of John Simpson, the UK’s pre-eminent classical architect, and Martin Brudnizki, the world’s most in-demand designer. Expect next-gen public spaces, creatively balancing sociability and privacy, and bedrooms that combine Simpson’s gravitas with Brudnizki’s glamour. The hotel, overlooking Parker’s Piece, will be quintessentially English and the literary and academic spirit of Cambridge will be one of its defining characteristics. It will comprise 192 beautiful and ‘playfully’ designed new hotel rooms and suites with hints of Cambridge Blue, yellow and red that will enliven each space and complete with bespoke furniture and statement chandelier lighting. Many suites on the top floor have access to private balconies with views of Parker’s Piece and bathrooms located inside the original domed turrets. The destination restaurant and bar, Parker’s Tavern, will be inspired by the communal dining halls synonymous with Cambridge Colleges. Head chef Tristan Welch has designed every dish to be a whimsical re-imagining of a British classic, sourced from field, fen and England’s seas. The hotel’s library will pay homage to the destination of Cambridge and its academic heritage. Curated by Heywood Hill – one of the leading bookshops of London, trusted by readers and collectors throughout the English-speaking world, the space will be a place to escape and relax, filled with books from renowned authors. University Arms, Cambridge is a 60-minute train ride from London or 90 minutes by car, i.e. goodbye Cornwall, hello Cambridge for 2018’s hot weekend away.
HOW: Rates will start from £205 per room www.universityarms.com
BEST OF BRITISH CUISINE
- TRISTAN WELCH TO OPEN PARKER’S TAVERN, THE HOTTEST NEW RESTAURANT IN CAMBRIDGE
Parker’s Tavern launching in June 2018 and will be a stand-alone destination restaurant and bar serving good, honest, locally sourced food – a delicious taste of Cambridge. The independently run restaurant will be overseen by East Anglian Chef Tristan Welch, who has returned to where he was born and bred following a stint in Mustique. It will be a beautiful, flamboyant and idiosyncratic restaurant – the perfect place for all day dining and amongst the most desirable social venues in Cambridge. Everything served will have British origins and will be rooted back to Cambridge and East Anglian producers. With its own street entrance, Parker’s Tavern will be part of the UNIVERSITY ARMS hotel and will be overlooking Parker’s Piece. It has been designed by Martin Brudnizki and will mirror the communal dining halls synonymous with Cambridge Colleges, featuring an eclectic mix of free-standing dining chairs and benches, finished in deep red and mustard yellow leather. Wall panelling will be in famous Cambridge Blue, offset by a traditional dark wood herringbone floor and original stained-glass windows with crest detailing. A contemporary selection of artwork will provide juxtaposition to tradition with injections of colour, introducing warmth and fun to the space. There will be up to 110 covers in the restaurant and 61 in the bar and the food menu will consist of a selection of new modern classics, complimented by a seasonally changing menu, which will be “as unpredictable as mother nature”. Signature dishes will include Roasted Scallops with Coastline Herbs and Sole with Brown Shrimps, Epicure Potatoes and Nut-Brown Butter – inspired by Tristan’s childhood holidays by the British seaside. Traditional comfort food will be celebrated – Hobston’s Choice Pie will be a locally inspired seasonal pie of the day and Parker’s Tavern ‘Spag Bol’ is a two-day slow-cook recipe using the finest quality ingredients generously.

In 2018, Gleneagles will be introducing the latest addition to the glorious playground, “Little Glen & The Den”, offering younger guests of the iconic Scottish hotel an exciting new adventure. Little Glen is a colourful, vibrant and fully supervised crèche for 2 – 9 year olds and a fun play environment for happy tots, adventurous spirits and curious minds. With bright, fresh colour schemes, different textures and tactile furnishings, as well as an arts and crafts workshop, the space has been designed to stimulate play, interaction and learning. With a countryside theme Little Glen features an indoor treehouse; toy campfire and tepees; play stables with hobby horses; Gleneagles railway carriage; and pretend grass flooring scattered with ‘cuddly’ wildlife chairs. Little Glen & The Den follows the launch of Gleneagles’ new beauty lodge called “Bob & Cloche”. Named after two style motifs of the Jazz age – the racy ‘bob’ haircut and the close-fitting ‘cloche’ hat by French milliner Caroline Riboux – the former gate lodge has been transformed into a series of elegant beauty rooms with a bold Art Deco-inspired design to celebrate Gleneagles’ rich 1920s heritage. The beauty rooms include a nail bar, pedicure room, hairstyling room and treatment rooms, each offering an effortlessly elegant ambience decorated with contemporary ivory leather chairs and stools. The new look by award-winning Martin Brudnizki Design Studio includes The Coral Room, a bar and all-day dining space that flows over three rooms and has a 1920s speakeasy vibe that isl redefining the London cocktail scene. The bar also includes a high gloss lacquered finish in coral for the original paneled walls, five bespoke Murano chandeliers, antiuque mirrors and brass detailing. The new guest lounge has a Lutyen’ themed fireplace, muted greens and pinks for furnishings as well as heritage-inspired wallpaper. SINGITA PAMUSHANA IN ZIMBABWE TO RE-OPEN IN MAY 2018 FOLLOWING A DESIGN TRANSFORMATION
Following a significant design transformation, Singita Pamushana in the south-east of the country is set to reopen in May 2018, with bold new interiors which will bring guests even closer to the wild. The iconic Zimbabwean lodge holds a proud heritage, while also heralding Zimbabwean pride and renewed optimism. The lodge overlooks a lake within the 130,000-acre Malilangwe Reserve, surrounded by 38 different habitats and ecological zones teeming with rare wildlife – such as the roan and sable antelope, a high concentration of black rhino as well as fourteen species of eagle. Malilangwe remains virtually untouched by humankind and occupies a key position in an area that is one of Africa’s largest bio-refuges. A visit to Singita Pamushana offers no traditional African safari – the wisdom of thousands of years of Shangaan culture is depicted in over 100 of southern Africa’s most pristine rock art sites that date back over 2,000 years. Reminiscent of Great Zimbabwe and tribal dynasties of the region, the redesign of Singita Pamushana will amplify references to the local Shangaan culture and mix contemporary styles inspired by African patterns and shapes. The massive proportions and smart details will set the tone against colour blocked palettes of ochre tan, ebony black, ivory white, and gold and brass metals showcasing Singita’s refined style. The main lodge decks and living spaces will be extended to maximise the connection to the natural beauty of surrounding rocky outcrops, the dam and wildlife. Two new two-bedroom suites will be added to the lodge, offering 8 suites in total and an exclusive-use 5-bedroom villa. Each suite will have a private pool overlooking the Malilangwe Dam and surrounding bush. While telescopes are provided to spot the game along the lake shore below, guests can also enjoy walking safaris, community visits, rock art site visits, fishing and sundowner cruises on the dam below the lodge. Early morning and afternoon game drives are also included, as are spot-lit night drives and guided bush walks. A number of hides have been developed next to popular waterholes to enable close-up encounters with the game in the area. Guests staying at Singita Pamushana are contributing directly to on-going projects at Singita that benefit the land and community. Some of these projects include the successful reintroduction of black and white rhino into the reserve, the translocation of rhino to other safe havens in Africa, and funding an elite team of anti-poaching patrols.
HOW: Rates at Singita Pamushana start from USD$1,495 per person per night on a full board basis. www.singita.com

EXPLORE MOZAMBIQUE’S UNTOUCHED SOUTH WITH AMPERSAND TRAVEL’S NEW SOUTHERN AFRICA PORTFOLIO
- THE SOUTH OPENS UP IN 2018 WITH THE COMPLETION OF
- THE BIGGEST SUSPENSION BRIDGE IN AFRICA & FLEXIBLE TOURIST VISAS
With the recent availability of 30-day tourist visas on entry and improved infrastructure, Mozambique’s untouched southern coast is opening up to travellers for the first time in 2018. While Mozambique is known for its smart northern lodges, Ampersand Travel’s new southern Mozambique itinerary takes in the country’s lesser-known south, which is forging its own path with miles of empty beaches and smart hideouts stowed away in the dunes. This month, the completion of a 110km paved road stretching from Maputo to the South African border (which includes a $725 million suspension bridge – the biggest in Africa) cuts the driving time to the coast by more than a half, offering an alternative to the costly helicopter route. This is set to pit it against the better-known, more northern archipelagos of Bazaruto and the Quirimbas. Located just 62 miles south of Maputo, the Maputo Special Reserve is one of only 36 biodiversity hotspots worldwide. This is such a special region as it is sandwiched between two national parks—Mkuze Game Reserve in South Africa and Maputo Elephant Reserve—and the land has a very low human population, which makes it incredibly pristine. White Pearl is set on a secluded bay and is one of the only super-smart hotels in this part of Mozambique. All 21 rooms are perched on stilts above sand dunes and are the definition of beach-house chic, with standing bathtubs and private plunge pools overlooking the Indian Ocean. The cuisine at White Pearl is excellent, known for its tapas style lunches with a Portuguese flavour – freshly grilled piri-piri prawns accompanied by South African wines. Guests can swim with dolphins, snorkel with turtles or visit their nesting sites (mid-Nov to mid-Feb), scuba dive, go deep sea fishing, or explore the sand dunes by horseback. Further along the coast, and nestled between the Indian Ocean, golden sandy beaches and the enchanting forest dunes of the secluded Machangulo Peninsula, the boutique Machangulo Beach Lodge offers rustic luxury amongst untamed nature. The hotel’s Beach Chalets are set in the dune forests close to the shoreline and are arranged in clusters of four, with each cluster sharing a swimming pool and lounge. Head off to snorkel and enjoy a picnic lunch at the Inhaca Island Marine Reserve, kayak through the estuaries and offshore reefs where you might spot dolphins, and visit Santa Maria village to gain an insight into the local way of life. TAJ EXOTICA RESORT & SPA, ANDAMANS – OPENING APRIL 2018
FIRST LUXURY RESORT TO OPEN ON INDIA’S UNTOUCHED BEACH DESTINATION WITH LOCAL ISLAND ADVENTURES
NEW FLIGHT LINKS FROM INDIA’S KEY CITIES – MUMBAI, KOLKATA, CHENNAI, DELHI, BANGALORE
Leading Asian hotel group, Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris puts the Andamans on the map in April 2018, with the first luxury resort to open on the archipelago. A game changer for this relatively undiscovered destination, the new Taj Exotica will be located on Havelock Island on the crescent shaped Radnanagar Beach – one of the best beaches in Asia. Taj has taken great care to construct a 72-villa world class resort, inspired by the pitch-roof stilted huts inhabited by the indigenous Jawara tribe, within 46 acres of jungle, forests and mangroves, while preserving the fragile eco-system of the island. To limit the resort’s carbon footprint, not a single tree has been felled during the construction of the resort. The surrounding coconut and Arecanut trees as well as the mangroves remain undisturbed and have been incorporated into the resort’s design. An onsite bottling plant, waste disposal system and a sanitation treatment plant for water purification have been set up. Additional green initiatives will also include solar energy panels for generating electricity to further reduce the consumption of diesel. Guests can meet with the in-house Naturalist who will work closely with the local NGOS and authorities towards the preservation of the marine life and the natural environment, which enjoys an abundance of bird life – over 270 species have been sighted on the archipelago. Havelock Island is well known for its dive sites and Taj can offer interesting destination experiences including underwater photography, kayaking through the mangroves, diving through the rich marine life or just relax and take in the stunning views of the Radhanagar and Elephant beaches. The new resort will also be home to a Jiva Spa and three restaurants, each of which tell the history of the island’s inhabitants – including the Indian freedom fighters incarcerated by the British in the 19th Century in the notorious Cellular Jail and the brief occupation of the Japanese during World War II. The Settlers fine dining restaurant uses homegrown ingredients to create modern innovative dishes rooted in the flavours of South East Asian, Tamil, Keralan and Bengali cuisine, while speciality restaurant Shoreline offers coastal curries and fish from the Andaman sea and Bay of Bengal. For international comfort food, the Turtle House offers global grills and a selection of Taj signature dishes curated from the chefs at the leading Taj Hotels. New flight links from core cities across India (Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi and Bangalore) will make this glorious beach haven even easier to access as part of an exclusive Taj itinerary.
