Cambridge has rocketed from backwater to boom town, thanks to its burgeoning high-tech industries. Those Silicon Fen millions may have transformed the city into the UK’s third wealthiest and spawned a Shoreditch-cool culinary scene, with trendy food trucks, but it lacks a hip, A-list place to stay. Next year that anomaly will be spectacularly rectified with the reopening of its landmark hotel, UNIVERSITY ARMS, CAMBRIDGE, after a two-year, £80m renovation by the dream team of John Simpson, the UK’s pre-eminent classical architect, and Martin Brudnizki, the world’s most in-demand designer. Expect next-gen public spaces, creatively balancing sociability and privacy, and bedrooms that combine Simpson’s gravitas with Brudnizki’s glamour. The hotel, overlooking Parker’s Piece, will be quintessentially English and the literary and academic spirit of Cambridge will be one of its defining characteristics. It will comprise 192 beautiful and ‘playfully’ designed new hotel rooms and suites with hints of Cambridge Blue, yellow and red that will enliven each space and complete with bespoke furniture and statement chandelier lighting. Many suites on the top floor have access to private balconies with views of Parker’s Piece and bathrooms located inside the original domed turrets. The destination restaurant and bar, Parker’s Tavern, will be inspired by the communal dining halls synonymous with Cambridge Colleges. Head chef Tristan Welch has designed every dish to be a whimsical re-imagining of a British classic, sourced from field, fen and England’s seas. The hotel’s library will pay homage to the destination of Cambridge and its academic heritage.   • TRISTAN WELCH TO OPEN PARKER’S TAVERN, THE HOTTEST NEW RESTAURANT IN CAMBRIDGE

Parker’s Tavern launching in June 2018 and will be a stand-alone destination restaurant and bar serving good, honest, locally sourced food – a delicious taste of Cambridge. The independently run restaurant will be overseen by East Anglian Chef Tristan Welch, who has returned to where he was born and bred following a stint in Mustique. It will be a beautiful, flamboyant and idiosyncratic restaurant – the perfect place for all day dining and amongst the most desirable social venues in Cambridge.  Everything served will have British origins and will be rooted back to Cambridge and East Anglian producers. With its own street entrance, Parker’s Tavern will be part of the UNIVERSITY ARMS hotel and will be overlooking Parker’s Piece. It has been designed by Martin Brudnizki and will mirror the communal dining halls synonymous with Cambridge Colleges, featuring an eclectic mix of free-standing dining chairs and benches, finished in deep red and mustard yellow leather.  Wall panelling will be in famous Cambridge Blue, offset by a traditional dark wood herringbone floor and original stained-glass windows with crest detailing.  A contemporary selection of artwork will provide juxtaposition to tradition with injections of colour, introducing warmth and fun to the space. There will be up to 110 covers in the restaurant and 61 in the bar and the food menu will consist of a selection of new modern classics, complimented by a seasonally changing menu, which will be “as unpredictable as mother nature”. Signature dishes will include Roasted Scallops with Coastline Herbs and Sole with Brown Shrimps, Epicure Potatoes and Nut-Brown Butter – inspired by Tristan’s childhood holidays by the British seaside.  Traditional comfort food will be celebrated – Hobston’s Choice Pie will be a locally inspired seasonal pie of the day and Parker’s Tavern ‘Spag Bol’ is a two-day slow-cook recipe using the finest quality ingredients generously.

HOLKHAM HALL CELEBRATES THE ANNIVERSARIES OF TWO KEY FIGURES INVOLVED IN THE HISTORY OF THE ESTATE.

DISCOVER THOMAS COKE’S INSPIRATION BEHIND HOLKHAM HALL AND RENOWNED GARDEN DESIGNER HUMPHRY REPTON’S VISION FOR THE GROUNDS

This year, Holkham Hall in Norfolk, one of England’s greatest stately homes, will be celebrating the 300th anniversary since Thomas Coke, 1st Earl of Leicester, returned from his Grand Tour of Europe. A new exhibition, ‘Treasures and Trophies: The Making of a Gentleman and a Great House’, shows how Thomas was inspired by his six-year journey to build Holkham Hall. To bring the story and history to life, the exhibition team at Holkham has ensured that there will be plenty of opportunity for interaction. Adults and children can walk in the shoes of Thomas Coke, dressing up in costume, create a mini Palladian building from blocks, witness the food he ate and discover a replica studio of the Italian painter, Francesco Trevisani, where Thomas Coke, aged 20, sat for his portrait which now hangs in the Manuscript Library of the hall. Appealing to lovers of culture, history and families alike, ‘Treasures and Trophies’ will offer a great day out for all generations. In addition, visitors to Holkham will have the opportunity to uncover renowned, landscape gardener Humphry Repton’s work in Holkham park with 2018 marking the 200th anniversary of Repton’s death. Repton is buried at the nearby Norfolk town of Aylsham. His life and work is being celebrated with a special programme of over 40 events across Norfolk this year. Visitors will now be able to trace back the landscape seen today to its natural origins. Frequently referred to as one of the best-loved luminaries of English garden history, Holkham’s celebration of Repton will offer a detailed insight into his important work at Holkham.

Remember when Mayfair hotels tried to pass themselves off as Marylebone? Expect them to claim they’re on the borders of Bloomsbury in 2018.  SINGITA PAMUSHANA IN ZIMBABWE TO RE-OPEN IN MAY 2018 FOLLOWING A DESIGN TRANSFORMATION

Following a significant design transformation, Singita Pamushana in the south-east of the country is set to reopen in May 2018, with bold new interiors which will bring guests even closer to the wild. The iconic Zimbabwean lodge holds a proud heritage, while also heralding Zimbabwean pride and renewed optimism. The lodge overlooks a lake within the 130,000-acre Malilangwe Reserve, surrounded by 38 different habitats and ecological zones teeming with rare wildlife – such as the roan and sable antelope, a high concentration of black rhino as well as fourteen species of eagle. Malilangwe remains virtually untouched by humankind and occupies a key position in an area that is one of Africa’s largest bio-refuges. A visit to Singita Pamushana offers no traditional African safari – the wisdom of thousands of years of Shangaan culture is depicted in over 100 of southern Africa’s most pristine rock art sites that date back over 2,000 years. In Spring 2018, The Safari Collection is set to add a brand-new rock art itinerary to their portfolio of tailor-made, East-African safari experiences. This new safari will be led by David Coulson, an internationally renowned petroglyph photographer and author, as well as Chairman and Founder of TARA (Trust for African Rock Art). The privately guided experience will take guests on a tour with David to some of the most interesting rock art sites in Kenya, discovering how civilisations of the past lived, loved, dressed and danced – unique insights brought to light beyond the study of ancient human remains. The tour begins at The Safari Collection’s iconic Giraffe Manor, followed by Sasaab Lodge. The next part of the journey will see guests fly to big Cave and Kipsing Rock Site before heading North West over the vast wilderness of Samburu and the northern mountains to Lokori. Here, the cave paintings completed by the first inhabitants of Samburu Land will introduce guests to the rich history of Rock Art in Kenya. Lunch will then be served under palms along the Kerio River, one of the longest rivers in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province starting from Eldama Ravine and ending in Lake Turkana. After lunch, guests will fly north east across the Suguta Valley and over the amazing Lake Logipi, or Flamingo Lake. This lake is home to millions of flamingo, and when viewed from above in a helicopter, the spectacle is astonishing. The helicopter will later land in sand dunes for sundowners, before a short flight takes guests to Desert Rose for dinner. Desert Rose is one of the most secluded desert hideaways in Kenya, a unique eco-friendly lodge located at 5,500 feet on the verdant forest slopes of Mt Nyiru. The following morning, guests will depart Desert Rose and fly to The Nabuyatom Crater, a geological marvel in the middle of Kenya’s only Desert Lake – Lake Turkana. They will then head off to the engraving sites at Lake Turkana and fly over magnificent views of the South Island National Park over to Mt. Por to an incredible site on an ancient lava beach near the lake.
