The Westin Singapore supports para-athletes at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon

In celebration of its third straight year as the Official Elite Hotel of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon (SCSM), The Westin Singapore will mark the occasion by helping persons with disabilities (PWDs) achieve their sporting goals at this year’s event. From 6 to 7 December at the SCSM, PWDs will run alongside able-bodied participants in the 5KM, 10KM, Half Marathon, or Marathon categories past iconic sites in the heart of Singapore.

SCSM 2025 is set to welcome participants from all over the globe and is the region’s only World Athletics Gold Label race. As an established marquee event in Singapore’s sporting calendar, the SCSM welcomes professional, avid, and leisure runners to partake in an unparalleled running experience. The 2024 edition was a record-breaking event, attracting over 55,000 runners from Singapore and beyond.

Invited by the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC) as well as The Westin Singapore ambassadors Gregory Burns and Natalie Dau to register, the PWDs will receive complimentary entry to the category of their choice at this year’s SCSM, announced The Westin Singapore at the One Race, Many Journeys launch event on Wednesday (4 June). The event was attended by the ambassadors Burns and Dau, avid runners as well as guests from The Westin Singapore, the SDSC and Ironman.

Burns is a decorated Paralympic swimmer and motivational speaker, having clinched multiple medals across various Paralympics, including two gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta Paralympics. He then switched to endurance events and has taken part in many Ironman events, including those in South Korea and Singapore. Also an artist, Burns unveiled a special artwork he created for the initiative. ‘Runners’, a mixed media piece blending digital art and contemporary painting techniques, is Burns’ tribute to all the individuals who will participate in the SCSM 2025. It captures the transformative journey each runner takes as they realise their full potential. The artwork will also be used on exclusive merchandise. All proceeds from the sale of the original artwork and any related merchandise will go directly to support the Singapore Disability Sports Council.

Ultramarathoner, author , and motivational speaker Dau is well-known in the regional fitness industry, having won all 11 ultramarathons she has participated in. She recently completed Project 1000, a 1,000KM solo run comprising two marathons a day for 12 days for the second straight year in The Philippines, while raising money for underserved local children. Last year, her feat from Thailand to Singapore earned her the Singapore record for the “Fastest 1,000KM Thailand-Singapore Ultramarathon” as well as the Guinness World Record for fastest crossing of Peninsular Malaysia on foot (female).

At the launch event at Cook & Brew, Burns and Dau also shared stories of their inspiring journeys and gave tips to attendees on training, recovery , and nutrition. Dau, who will be taking part in the 10KM category at this year’s SCSM, then led some runners on a short 2.4KM run in the vicinity alongside the runWESTIN Concierge. At the event, attendees also gained valuable knowledge on effective warm-up, recovery and fueling techniques with post-recovery snacks and Hyperice experiences available there.

Runners who missed their chance to listen to Burns and Dau speak will get more chances soon as The Westin Singapore will organise more fireside chats with the ambassadors leading up to the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. More details will be announced soon.

James Walkden, General Manager of The Westin Singapore, said: “We are delighted to be the Official Elite Hotel for the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon for the third consecutive year. At The Westin Singapore, we’re always striving to elevate our premier wellness experiences for our guests and partners. This year, we wanted to do more to support the community and encourage more people to get involved. Therefore, we came up with the One Race, Many Journeys initiative to provide complimentary entry to this year’s SCSM to selected para-athletes and demonstrate that there are many ways to get to one destination and there is no one correct answer. This is in alignment with our Marriott International’s Serve360, Doing Good in Every Direction initiative as well as our Move Well pillar, which encourages movement for all. We hope to empower para-athletes to achieve their dreams by participating in Singapore’s largest running event alongside fellow fitness enthusiasts and, at the same time, inspire the community to keep moving and living well.”

Kelly Fan, Executive Director of the Singapore Disability Sports Council, said: “We’re grateful for the opportunity for persons with disabilities—both our para-athletes and members of the wider community—to be part of the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon this year, where people of all abilities can run alongside one another. For some, it will be their first time taking part in a race like this, and it’s a chance to step out of their comfort zone, stay active, and experience the energy of racing together with the wider community. For our para-athletes, it’s also a meaningful way to build discipline as they prepare for this event alongside their regular training. We hope this inspires more partners to join us in building inclusive platforms that foster strength, resilience, and unity through sport, regardless of ability or background.”
