Rasel Catering Launches Sustainable Thematic Buffet Setups to Boost Waste Reduction Initiatives

RASEL

Rasel Catering, Singapore’s well-known artisanal caterer, unveiled new sustainability initiatives at their latest corporate event, ‘Gaia Soirée: Elevating Eco-elegance and Flavours’, hosted at the Asian Civilisations Museum. The event highlighted their commitment to sustainability by incorporating recyclable materials and creatively repurposing old wooden pallets for décor, introducing a new approach to eco-friendly elegance.

With over 27 years in operation, Rasel Catering has catered more than 300,000 events, serving 36 to 40 million guests. Endorsed by the Health Promotion Board of Singapore for its healthy buffet menus, Rasel Catering also employs a state-of-the-art food waste valorisation system as part of its circular economy approach, the WasteMaster system, to convert organic food waste into high-quality protein for animal and aquaculture feed. Between April 2023 and June 2024, the WasteMaster system efficiently processed 4,000 kilograms of waste into valuable substrates.

Food Waste: An Increasing Problem in Singapore

In 2022, Singapore generated approximately 813,000 tonnes of food waste, a slight decrease from 2021. Despite this, food waste has increased by nearly 30 per cent over the past decade, and with a growing population, it is expected to continue rising.

Recognising the significant challenges of food wastage, Rasel Catering is stepping up its sustainability efforts. Besides cutting down on food and other waste, the company is focused on improving its closed-loop catering ecosystem. This includes implementing innovative strategies to minimise waste and promoting efficient use of resources throughout their operations.

Feasting Sustainably with Theme-Packed Buffets

The sustainable thematic buffets come in four themes: Organic Modern, Timeless Classic, Quiet Luxury, and Simply Kraft. Each buffet offers a curated selection of savoury canapés, mains, and delectable desserts. These themes highlight their commitment to sustainability and showcase culinary excellence with the finest ingredients.

Cutting-Edge Design and Strategic Partnerships for Waste Reduction

To boost sustainability, Rasel Catering has partnered with Trio Packaging, a leading corrugated manufacturing company in Singapore. Besides enhancing the dessert display, Trio Packaging provided eco-friendly tables and stools made from corrugated cardboard. This design reduces waste and minimises the use of linen, a common source of waste in traditional buffets.

Rasel Catering sources sustainable, locally grown ingredients, and has earned the Singapore Food Agency’s Farm-to-Table Highest Tier Award 2023 for sourcing at least 15% of its fresh produce from local farms. By partnering with local vendors, Rasel Catering ensures fresh, high quality farm-to-table ingredients like vegetables, mushrooms, eggs, fish, aloe vera, cress, and ice plant, promoting a resilient food supply chain for Singapore.

Through long-term partnerships with local vendors, the company effectively boosts the local economy and promotes sustainable farming practices. These efforts help reduce Rasel Catering’s carbon footprint and preserve the local ecosystem, supporting Singapore’s goal of becoming a zero-waste nation.
