Veuve Clicquot Presents Results of Third International Survey on Female Entrepreneurship During Singapore’s Inaugural Bold Conversations
Singapore, known for its vibrant business landscape, has taken centre stage as Veuve Clicquot, the esteemed champagne house, presents the results of its third international survey on female entrepreneurship. The findings were unveiled during Singapore’s inaugural Bold Conversations event at the exclusive Mandala Club. This gathering brought together four female trailblazers in the Lion City to discuss their personal perspectives on the survey’s findings, shedding light on the state of female entrepreneurship in Singapore.
The study, conducted as part of Bold by Veuve Clicquot, a renowned global program aimed at enhancing women’s inclusion, impact, and visibility in business, spanned 25 countries across five continents. Singapore’s inclusion in this pioneering research marks a significant milestone, providing valuable insights into the local landscape of female entrepreneurship for the first time.
Nausicaa Charrier, Marketing Director of Moët Hennessy Singapore and Malaysia, expressed enthusiasm about the thriving state of female entrepreneurship in Singapore and highlighted the need to empower women to redefine success on their terms. The survey, however, revealed certain gendered biases and inequalities that continue to persist despite the nation’s low gender gap in entrepreneurship.
Remarkably, Singapore boasts one of the lowest gender gaps in entrepreneurship, standing at just 4%. Half of the surveyed women are entrepreneurs, and an impressive 54% of those who are not currently entrepreneurs aspire to become one. These statistics reflect the determination and motivation among women in Singapore to venture into entrepreneurship.
However, the survey also shed light on the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs in the country. Sixty percent of female entrepreneurs and 51% of aspiring entrepreneurs believe that building a business carries greater risks for women compared to men. This perception could be attributed to existing logistical barriers, such as limited access to funding and difficulties in balancing work and family responsibilities.
Another concerning finding was that nearly half of the surveyed women (48%) believed that female entrepreneurs must adopt more masculine traits to achieve professional success. This mindset highlights the need for a societal shift to support women in business without compromising their authentic selves. Moreover, female entrepreneurs expressed a lack of sufficient female role models to inspire and guide them on their entrepreneurial journeys.
Veuve Clicquot issued a rallying call for collective action, emphasizing the importance of supporting women in their aspirations to become their own bosses and shape the world. The call to action aims to foster gender equality and create a healthier economy, politics, and society as a whole.
The Bold Conversations event at Mandala Club provided a platform for esteemed female trailblazers in Singapore to share their personal journeys and experiences. Notable figures like Johanne Siy from Lolla, Asia’s Best Female Chef of 2023, Sarah Bagharib, founder and director of Crazycat, and Rachel Lim, co-founder of Love Bonito, engaged in an insightful discussion moderated by Naomi Yeo. This event sought to empower female entrepreneurs from various sectors and connect them with inspiring role models who have defined their own paths to success.
In addition to hosting Bold Conversations, Veuve Clicquot also launched the Bold Open Database, an online platform that profiles and connects female entrepreneurs worldwide. This innovative solution aims to enhance the visibility of women entrepreneurs across all sectors, fostering a supportive ecosystem where women can register, be identified, and become visible to their peers globally. The database, spearheaded by computational scientist and entrepreneur Aurélie Jean, has already garnered significant attention with over a thousand registrations by women entrepreneurs, indicating its growing impact.
