Singapore filmmakers are invited to submit their short films to HUAWEI Film Awards (HFA) and win US$20,000. With four weeks left till the closing of the submissions, this is the last chance for film makers to get their work recognised in HUAWEI Film Awards. If you are an aspiring mobile-filmmaker and content creator looking for an avenue to showcase your creative talent to the world, now is the time to get those fresh ideas off the ground and breathe life into them with your Huawei smartphone.
All budding smartphone-filmmakers have until 25 February 2020 (11:59 PM GMT+8) to submit their entries at consumer.huawei.com/sg/campaign/film-awards/submission/. Films must be shot entirely on a Huawei mobile phone, following the theme “Empowering Your Possibilities”, with a running time within five to 10 minutes for long-form videos, and running time of a maximum of 60 seconds for short-form videos.
Submission entries will be reviewed by an esteemed judging panel of five prominent trailblazers in the film and broadcasting scene, namely Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Adele Lim, Thai postmodern filmmaker, screenwriter and novelist Prabda Yoon, and Rajay Singh, Award-winning film director and senior founder partner of production company Directors Think Tank. Joining them are Alex Lin, Asia Pacific President of Huawei Consumer Business Group, and Chris Humphrey, Director of Production of A+E Networks.
With the HUAWEI Film Awards (HFA), Huawei aims to provide content creators with an opportunity to break into the world of smartphone filmmaking. Boris Boo filmed his first smartphone short film for HFA
Renowned local director, Boris Boo, releases his first smartphone short film shot entirely with HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro to kick off the HUAWEI Film Awards in Singapore. Titled Karung Guni, Boris’ take on the HUAWEI Film Awards (HFA) theme “Empowering your Possibilities” is a heart-warming film on a local rag-and-bone man, and his son who reluctantly takes on and finds solace in his father’s work.
Describing the filming of Karung Guni as an uplifting experience, Boris explains that using the HUAWEI Mate 30 Pro allows him to work with a degree of mobility that he could never achieve with traditional shooting equipment, applauding the rapid technological breakthroughs which allow for high-quality cinematic shots on a smartphone camera.

An associate lecturer at the Polytechnics and Singapore Media Academy, Boris has extensive experience conceptualising and scripting numerous sitcoms, short films and variety shows. He directed features such as Where Got Ghost?, Aku Tak Bodoh, Phua Chu Kang The Movie and Lucky Boy. One of his notable highlights was local film “Just Follow Law”, which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the 44th Golden Horse Awards in 2007.
