Award-winning restaurant-bar, Tippling Club welcomes Yao Lu, Co-Owner and Head Bartender of The Union Trading Company and Birds of Paradise for a one-night only takeover. The Union Trading Company, known for their menu of 20 seasonal and classic cocktails has been ranked No. 30 by Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2019. Supported by Pernod Ricard, Yao Lu will feature four different cocktails specially designed for the night, giving guests tropical vibes from his new urban oasis in the concrete jungle of Shanghai: Birds of Paradise.
Keeping his promise of whisking you away into an exotic paradise is the classic and fresh Banana Daquiri, concocted with Havana 7, Lime, Birds of Paradise Coconut Cordial, and Green Chartreuse. Take your pick from other specially created cocktails by Yao Lu, including El Bandito, a sweet combination of Altos, Olorosso sherry, Apricot brandy, Orange bitters, and topped off with an orange zest garnish; or Zach’s Beijing Adventure, a mix of Monkey 47, lime, Chinese Hawthorn jam, Greek yoghurt, and a touch of absinthe.


Yao Lu has pushed the Shanghai cocktail scene in exciting new directions, but ironically the secret of his success is old-fashioned hospitality. Born in Texas, Lu studied hospitality management at the University of Houston and worked for influential bar guru, Bobby Heugel, at Anvil Bar & Refuge. They are experiences that shine through at his buzzy, all-smiles neighbourhood bar, where style and service are evenly matched. Cocktails change regularly, but could include Banana Alexander (rum, cream, banana liqueur) or Waltzing Matilda (gin, passionfruit syrup, sparking wine). No other barkeep in China combines craft and charisma so convincingly as this pedigreed bar-trade polymath – mentor, writer, consultant, owner-operator, and truly gifted drink smith.
