REVIEW | THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands 2019

The Phantom of the Opera, a musical classic, has returned to the Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands to sold-out previews and a fully packed house on opening night on 25th April.

Based on the classic novel Le Fantôme de L’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA tells the story of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano – Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her.

Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most famous musical is also one of the most successful in entertainment history, playing to over 145 million people in 150 cities across 30 countries.

The rising of the shattered chandelier signified the start of the show accompanied by the iconic overture against the magnificently built set transporting audiences back to 1881.  Igniting and illuminating such melodramatic doings and furiously sweeping them along is the high-octane music composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber in his most inspired mode. Luxuriously orchestrated, these unabashedly plush songs and atmospheric underscoring align in a fine, quivering key with the ultra-heightened story.

It is the longest-running show on Broadway, having celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2018, and has won more than 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards and four Olivier Awards, including one for Best Musical.

The 37 strong international cast is joined by a full 11-piece live orchestra playing some of Lloyd Webber’s most memorable music, including The Phantom of the Opera, Think of Me and Music of the Night.

The extraordinary strong vocals and acting of the entire team added to the success of the show.  A masterpiece, The Phantom of the Opera continues to impress, with modern twist and improvement. It is everything a great musical should be, impressive staging, amazing sets, larger-than-life props, specially-designed costumes, and an excellent cast.
