OUR REVIEW:
The LG V30+ is a big improvement forward. Simply put, this is LG’s best in recent memory and it’s also one of 2017’s best smartphones !
What we like:
- Streamlined design
- Light weight
- Bursting with high end features
- Big camera improvements, F1.6 aperture camera lens and Crystal Clear Lens
- Wide angle lens to capture more in one scene
- Powerful video capabilities eg Cine Video Mode
- Gorgeous OLED display QHD+ (2880 x 1440) OLED FullVision display
- Premium sound with advanced Hi-Fi Quad DAC, sound tuning by B&O PLAY
- Google Assistant and Voice Recognition
- Face Recognition unlock
What we do not like:
- Doesn’t launch with Android 8.0 Oreo
- Price at S$1098 without contract (of course we like it as low as possible for such a super phone)
- Nothing much that we don’t like , really.
Improving on the strengths of its predecessor, the V30+ features many innovative upgrades and smartphone firsts, including the first F1.6 aperture camera lens and the first glass Crystal Clear Lens. Continuing to push boundaries, the V30+ offers superior multimedia features such as Cine Video mode for producing movie-quality videos, premium sound with advanced Hi-Fi Quad DAC, sound tuning by B&O PLAY, and a unique Google Assistant and Voice Recognition feature.
Crystal Clear Display with Fast Response Time
Weighing just 158g, the V30+ is the world’s lightest smartphone in the six-inch and over category. It measures 8mm shorter and 3mm narrower than its predecessor, resulting in a firmer grip. The QHD+ (2880 x 1440) OLED FullVision display offers faster response time with minimal afterimages when viewing an action-packed movie or playing a game with quick movements. The V30+ takes full advantage of this rapid response time and the exceptional graphics delivered by the robust Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 835 Mobile Platform.

The plastic OLED (P-OLED) FullVision display in the V30+ features the distinctive 18:9 aspect ratio and minimized-bezel technology for a truly immersive experience.
The superb clarity comes from the 4.15 million pixels of the QHD+ (1440 x 2880) OLED screen. Notably, LG’s self-emissive OLED display is capable of producing “perfect black” that delivers infinite contrast ratio with each OLED pixel generating its own light. With OLED, there is no leaking of light so images look richer with ultra- accurate, but never overly saturated, colors.
Even with a six inch display, the V30+ boasts a smaller body than its predecessor thanks to the slimmer upper and lower bezels by 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
The V30+ supports HDR10, delivering unparalleled high dynamic range video. Bright areas are brighter than ever and dark areas are darker than ever. The result is greater clarity and finer details for the ultimate smartphone visual experience.
And with virtual reality now coming into its own, the OLED FullVision display takes V30+ users into new worlds via Daydream, Google’s platform for high quality mobile VR.

LG V30+ Great for taking close up photo like food

Become a Cinematographer with F1.6 Crystal Clear Lens and Cine Video Mode
The LG V30+ offers powerful video capabilities. The main camera on the rear of the V30+ is a F1.6 aperture Crystal Clear Lens that lets in more light, delivering brighter, more dynamic shots with highly accurate colors and clear images. The second lens in the V30+ dual camera is an upgraded 13MP wide angle lens with two-thirds less edge distortion than in the V20.

The V30+ builds on LG’s heritage of excellence in smartphone photography. It is the first smartphone to be armed with a glass lens. This is quite a bold first for LG, as glass lenses are usually found only in professional DSLR cameras. The Crystal Clear Lens, as it is called, has an aperture of F1.6 (the lower the F number, the wider the aperture) which allows more light through than conventional plastic lenses and which makes your images all the more vivid.

The V30+ also takes wide-angle photography another step forward. Its edge distortion rate is significantly down by one third, and it applies a wider aperture than that of the V20. The result is better, brighter large-group wefies, vast interiors and panoramic landscapes.
The advanced dual camera module is smaller than the module in the V20, resulting in the near flat rear profile of the V30+. For the smoothest and sharpest images, the main standard angle camera is supported by Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) and Hybrid Auto Focus that combines both Laser Detection Auto Focus and Phase Detection Auto Focus.

Video is now the most popular media played on mobile devices and more and more people are sharing their own videos on social media. Accordingly, the V30+’s Cine Video mode gives the user’s video clips a professional quality. Cine Video achieves this with two features: Cine Effect and Point Zoom.
Cine Effect is the mood-setter. You choose from a palette of 15 presets – Romantic Comedy, Summer Blockbuster, Melodrama, Noir, etc. You can also adjust the intensity of the colors and add vignette effects. The colors applied in Cine Effect were developed in collaboration with post-production coloration experts.

Point Zoom in the Cine Video mode offers a new way of zooming in and out with a smartphone. Instead of only being able to zoom in on the center subject, you can use it to home in anywhere on the screen for greater creative effect. Point Zoom allows you to move in on the subject in one smooth motion as if shooting with a professional camera dolly.

The V30+ supports LG-Cine Log in the Manual Video Mode. It can preserve a wide dynamic range and color gamut in the saved files which gives you greater flexibility for making adjustments in post-production.
In the Gallery app, Quick Video Editor allows users to edit their clips in a range of ways including adding themes, text and soundtracks.
David Franco, a director of photography for popular shows such as Game of Thrones, had high praise for the camera, whose cinematic capabilities enabled him to shoot his daily life and capture memories of his families and friends. He also applauded the Cine Effect mode, which allowed him to apply color palettes to give his home movies either a mysterious, eerie or a bright summery vibe.

Graphy, found under Manual Mode, professionalizes even amateur photographs. It provides a series of professional sample photographs that capture different moods in different styles and serve as guidelines, allowing you to replicate their metadata presets. Once a sample is selected, Graphy adjusts white balance, shutter speed, aperture and ISO in line with the sample photo. You can add more professional photos from the Graphy website or mobile app available in Google Play Store.
Any shutterbug can now produce quality photos simply by choosing the image and pressing the shutter. Users can select professional images from the Graphy website or mobile app and apply the same presets such as white balance, shutter speed, aperture and ISO to their photos.
Crystal Clear Sound Backed by Hi-Fi Quad DAC
LG has taken its widely lauded Hi-Fi Quad DAC to the next level in the LG V30+ with new inclusions of digital filters and sound presets. The digital filter modifies the pre- and post-ringing of the impulse response, while the pre-programmed presets allow users to easily find the sound experience that best suits their tastes, from enhanced to detailed and live to bass.
The LG V30+ is also the first global smartphone to support Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) technology that enables the streaming of high-resolution audio. MQA captures the sound of the original studio master and folds it into a small file to make high-resolution audio easy to stream.

The V30+ supports a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC, powered by ESS Technology’s SABRE ES9218P, with digital filters and sound presets newly added to the audio features of its predecessor smartphone. The digital filter, previously only available in high-end Digital Audio Players (DAPs), modifies the pre- and post-ringing of the impulse response. The filters are offered in the digital filter: short, sharp and slow.
You can easily find the sound options that best suit your taste via sound presets. The V30+ offers four presets: enhanced, detailed, live and bass. These were chosen after extensive research into the modes most popular among audiophiles.
The Hi-Fi Quad DAC controls left and right audio signals separately. Adjustment to the balance is so refined as to make you feel like you’re right there in the performance. LG has managed to slash the distortion rate to a remarkable 0.0002 percent. The audio paths are wider than ever which means the V30+ can handle large, high quality audio files quickly and accurately.
The phone’s HD Audio Recorder lets you use its audio receiver as a microphone (Receiver-as-a-Mic or RAM). The RAM can make clear recording of sounds from a whisper to a thunderclap without any distortion.
The overall sound experience with the V30+ has been fine-tuned by sound engineers from B&O PLAY*. Also, the phone comes with a set of B&O PLAY earphones.
A Smarter, More Convenient and More Secure User Experience
The Google Assistant on the LG V30+ features unique capabilities specific to the phone. Say “Ok Google, take a wide angle selfie” to launch the camera app with the setting on the front-facing camera wide angle mode.
The convenience of the Second Screen has evolved into a new Always-on Display (AOD) feature and Floating Bar. When the display is off, the AOD replaces the Second Screen by providing shortcuts to Quick Tools and Music Player. The semi-transparent Floating Bar can be customized with up to five apps for easy access.
Security on the LG V30+ is also more improved and advanced. With Face Recognition, the V30+ can be unlocked instantaneously using the front facing camera and without pressing any buttons even when the phone’s display is off.
“The V series has always been demonstrating new practical mobile technologies that contribute to high quality content creation and the V30+ has not lost sight of its roots,” said Mr David Yoh, Mobile Communications Business Director of LG Electronics Singapore. “With its F1.6 Crystal Clear Lens Camera and Cine Video mode, the LG V30+ is designed to help create professional-looking content without professional-level complexity.”

A Floating Bar replaces the Second Screen, a feature unique to the V series. Instead of taking up space on the top of the display, the Floating Bar can be placed anywhere on the display, or even dragged off-screen. While it usually sits on the edge of the screen as a semicircle-shaped icon, when tapped, it expands into a bar, showing most used applications, including Shortcuts, Quick Contacts, Music Player and Capture Tools.
In sleep mode, the V30+’s Always-on Display shows useful information such as time, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Camera, Capture and Flashlight. Up to six features can be displayed on the AOD which can be customized with different clocks or the photo of your choice.
Customers can connect Google Home to the V30+ and use Google Assistant to control a compatible washing machine or robot vacuum.
The LG V30+ is priced at S$1,098, and will be available from 2 December 2017, at M1, Singtel, StarHub and other LG authorized retailers.
