Audio-Technia Unveils New ATH-ADX7000 “True Open-Air” Flagship Headphones

ATH-ADX7000

Open-Air Dynamic Headphones

High-end precision paired with premium comfort

Designed and constructed in Japan, the open-air ATH-ADX7000 headphones employ more than 60 years of experience in transducer technology to achieve a truly pure, natural and precise listening experience.

High-Concentricity X (Transfer) Dynamic Transducer (HXDT) technology is a proprietary driver manufacturing process newly developed by Audio-Technica to be the foundation of the ATH-ADX7000, our flagship True Open-Air headphones.

Audio-Technica’s ability to manage the full manufacturing process of the headphone driver, from design and construction to final integration, enables us to control every detail, resulting in a precise, pure audio experience for our customers.

The ATH-ADX7000 features a lightweight honeycomb aluminum housing with a die-cast magnesium frame and arm structure. At just 275 g (270 g with the Alcantara ear pads), the ADX7000 offers a featherlight open-air headphone experience, delivering premium comfort without compromising performance.

Features

A Driver Unlike Any Other

True Open-Air Audio

At the heart of sound is the movement of air—and mastering that movement is key to headphone design. Audio-Technica’s True Open-Air Audio approach delivers pure, realistic sound by precisely controlling airflow and relying solely on diaphragm movement to reproduce audio. This design relies on two main principles:

  • First, unlike closed-back or semi-open headphones, open-back designs allow air to move freely through the housing. This reduces internal pressure and resonance, resulting in a clear, natural, and fatigue-free listening experience—even over long periods.
  • Second, the precision of the driver design is paramount. Drawing on more than 60 years of transducer expertise, our custom-made drivers are specifically engineered for open-air performance. They reproduce the full frequency range—including deep bass typically reserved for closed-back models—without artificial frequency shaping or resonance from the earcup.

Sound is produced directly from diaphragm movement—no added coloration, just authentic, spacious audio. The open design also ensures long-lasting comfort, making it ideal for extended listening sessions.

High-Concentricity X (Transfer) Dynamic Transducer

As part of Audio-Technica’s perpetual pursuit of pure sound, we have developed a new innovative manufacturing process that results in a more precise driver unit for our open-back headphones. This new technology, entitled High-Concentricity X (Transfer) Dynamic Transducer (HXDT), uses a precision molding process developed in Japan. This method controls the diaphragm shape with much greater accuracy.

The integrated baffle, introduced with the ATH-ADX5000, has been further improved to enhance the concentric alignment of all circular driver components. This includes the baffle plate, magnet, voice coil, and diaphragm. HXDT achieves extremely high precision, with concentricity tolerances tightened to within ±0.02 mm—a level nearly ten times tighter compared to the conventional ±0.1 to 0.2 mm—enabling more accurate vibration transfer and consistent sound reproduction.

This ultra-precise alignment ensures more consistent diaphragm movement, as there’s less mechanical variation across units; improved transient response and microdetail, as the diaphragm is centered and tensioned perfectly; and, cleaner, more natural sound reproduction, since less energy is lost to off-axis vibrations or misalignment artifacts.

As a result, the diaphragm moves more freely and precisely in the center, where the voice coil is located. This allows for more focused and efficient energy transfer from magnet to coil to diaphragm. The entire sound output comes cleanly from the diaphragm itself, resulting in more accurate, dynamic, and detailed sonic performance.

The voice coil has also been improved, increasing the impedance to 490 ohms without increasing the weight. Although higher voltage is required to drive this coil, the higher impedance also increases the mechanical force of the coil-magnet system, resulting in faster transients, more defined low low-frequency response, and an expanded dynamic range.

The alignment of the driver components is not just a mechanical achievement—it’s part of the sonic fingerprint of the ADX7000. The performance comes not only from the components and the materials used to create them, but from how accurately every part is manufactured and assembled.

As open-sound production relies almost solely on the quality of the driver, this new technology has vastly improved the potential of open-air headphones.

Core Mount Technology

Introduced with the ATH-ADX5000, the Core Mount Technology perfectly balances the acoustic impedance of the front and back cavities. This allows a truly symmetrical motion of the diaphragm at any frequency.

Effortless. Transparent. Analog at Heart.

The ADX7000 delivers a sound signature built on clarity, openness, and natural dynamics. These are headphones that get out of the way, allowing all the power, nuance, and space of the sound source to come through.

The bass is full and powerful, with solid weight and excellent control. It reaches deep with impressive extension, anchoring the presentation with authority and dynamic impact.

Subtle details come through clearly in the midrange, but with a smooth, effortless presentation. Instruments feel present and lifelike, with clear spatial definition and natural placement across the soundstage. The upper mids and treble are poised, delivering the right mix of air and refinement without tipping into harshness or sounding restrained. This lends intimacy to vocals and a natural realism to transients without introducing glare.

Detail is rendered through depth and layering, not artificial sharpness.

Imaging is precise, with wide stereo spread and clearly defined instrument separation. The sense of “air” comes from natural decay and spatial cues.

For listeners who value transparency without fatigue, musicality without exaggeration, and analog tone with refined timbre, the ADX7000 draws you closer to the source and keeps you there.

Made in Japan

From conception to construction, every element of the ATH-ADX7000 has been carefully crafted by our team in Japan to produce the ultimate open-air listening experience.

Premium Comfort

Featherlight Open-Air Headphones

The ATH-ADX7000 is an extremely light pair of open-air headphones, at just 275 g. We achieved this by using honeycomb aluminum housings and a magnesium die-cast finish, which provide both a featherlight feel and an ergonomic construction, ensuring every element of the headphones is contributing to a seamless audio experience.

Unlike conventional punched-metal designs, the honeycomb aluminum mesh of the ADX7000 is formed through a two-step process: the aluminum is first pressed into its curved shape, then the hexagonal holes are precisely punched afterward. This method maximizes the open-area ratio for airflow, contributing to a more natural and spacious soundstage.

Magnesium was chosen not just for its light weight; it also has considerable strength and vibration absorption properties. It plays a key role in damping unnecessary vibrations generated by the driver’s powerful new voice coil, thus minimizing coloration and enhancing sonic purity.

Two Earpad Options: High-Density Velvet and Alcantara

The ADX7000 includes two earpad options to suit different comfort and listening preferences. The standard high-density velvet earpads were carefully selected for their acoustic filtering characteristics, helping suppress unwanted resonances while preserving important frequencies. The material, also used in high-end cosmetic applications, ensures consistent density and a soft, breathable feel during extended use. The included Alcantara earpads offer a more durable, luxurious alternative, with slightly different acoustic properties that shift the perceived tonal balance. Both options provide a unique listening experience.

Included Accessories

The ATH-ADX7000 comes complete with a nylon-wound, balanced XLR cable and a nylonwound unbalanced cable with 6.3 mm (1/4″) gold-plated stereo plug. Both cables have Neutrik connectors and gold-tipped A2DC connectors.

The headphones also include a compact storage case, for easy transportation.
