For one night only, Japanese culture-lovers in Singapore will get the chance to witness a Japanese song and dance spectacular like no other as TOKYO〜the city of music and love〜 arrives at Esplanade Theatre.

Taking place on Saturday June 22, the show is starring, produced, and directed by multi-award winning Japanese actor and singer Yu Shirota, and comes directly from a successful run in Tokyo, where it received standing ovations and rave reviews.

Shirota, who is known for his leading roles as Kagurazaka Makoto in Japanese action drama Hana-Kimi, and as Tuxedo Mask in the Sailor Moon Musicals, is set to delight Singapore audiences with his star-studded variety show, which features a diverse blend of lively, multilingual song and dance performances spanning J-pop, through to Disney classics and Broadway hits. This is interwoven with an eclectic mix of performance styles including contemporary street and jazz dance, along with rap, beatboxing and other surprises aimed at communicating the vibrancy and magic of ‘Tokyo,’ against the backdrop of mesmerizing Japanese set design, dazzling choreography, and extravagant costumes.

The much-anticipated production features an all-star cast, including co-direction from Kahori Kanaya, famous for her spectacular theme park shows across Japan, along with music direction from popular Japanese R&B singer SWEEP. Audiences can look forward to special guest performances by style icon and J-Pop princess miwa, and Singapore’s own multi-award-winning actor, popstar and home-grown heartthrob, Nathan Hartono

They are joined by live musicians and J-pop stars, RIOSKE (PeruPines), yuzu (FYURA PROJECT), and rising songstress, Rainy。plus, a troupe of dynamic dancers, including Kaoru Harada, Shunsuke Omura (SHUN), Nao Usui, BOXER and Tuki Takamura.

Tokyo〜the city of music and love〜 launched earlier this month at Tokyu Theatre Orb, Tokyo. Presented by Japan’s oldest and most esteemed production house Kyodo Tokyo, which is known for its dazzling Broadway-style productions, the Singapore show is the first show to be presented by Kyodo in Southeast Asia, with Singapore chosen for its debut due to its prominence as a key artistic and cultural centre for the region.

According to Yu Shirota: “This exciting new show is a fusion of diverse musical genres and dance, featuring some of the region’s most gifted performers and artists. Along with dynamic staging, choreography and costumes, audiences can expect to be wowed as we showcase the iconic places and landscapes which embody the vibrant energy that is synonymous with Tokyo and its embrace of worldwide cultures.”

“We are thrilled to bring the show to audiences in Singapore, as a central artistic hub in the region and our chosen stage to showcase our work globally. I am also excited to collaborate with Singapore’s very own Nathan Hartono for this one-of-a-kind production, which is not-to-be-missed for anyone who appreciates the artistic flair and creativity Japan is known for.”
