From its roots in 1974 as the first Holiday Inn in South East Asia, the hotel started its journey and grew from strength to strength, transitioning to become Royal Holiday Inn in 1985. Since then, the hotel evolved along with the local tourism landscape, as Singapore’s then-budding industry blossomed into the iconic destination we know today. The hotel has had developments in Orchard Road and the tourist landscape, going through a few rebranding exercises – from Royal Holiday Inn Crowne Plaza in 1990, to Singapore Royal Crowne Plaza Singapore in 1997, followed by the independent Royal Plaza on Scotts in 1999.

In its five decades, Royal Plaza on Scotts has been a trailblazer in introducing then never-heard-of value-adds in the hotel industry to its guests, living up to its reputation as being a hotel that provides warm and thoughtful hospitality. It was the first hotel to introduce a hotel-wide 100% smoke-free policy, and even provided complimentary mini-bar across all guest room categories, a move that other hotels then took to, as impressed guests started spreading the word on social media. At the peak of the wireless internet boom, Royal Plaza on Scotts became the first hotel to provide free internet, helping guests stay connected.

For its warm service and fun quirky approach to hospitality, Royal Plaza on Scotts has been voted for more than 10 consecutive years as the Best Independent Hotel in the Asia-Pacific at the Travel Trade Gazette’s Annual Travel Awards, and recognised again as an inductee in its Hall of Fame in 2021.

Along the way, Royal Plaza on Scotts also strived to give back to its community. In 2023, the hotel was awarded the Platinum Share Award for their long-standing partnership with the Community Chest, having donated over S$ 1 million via staff contributions, and various fund-raising events through the years.

Ever grateful for its achievements, Royal Plaza on Scotts recognises the efforts of its team and workers, dubbing them as ‘Chief Experience Officers’ (CEOs) and empowering them to go the extra mile in their work. The management is constantly engaging CEOs, to look into ways to improve the workplace, and have introduced many training and re-skilling initiatives and work-life balance schemes to benefit their CEOs, including doing away with the need to ‘clock-in’ and ‘clock-out’ for all CEOs when they come for work, and a “No Work Calls” policy after office-hours and over the weekends.

The family-like work culture has seen a number of dedicated CEOs who have worked with the hotel throughout its fifty years, and a significant number of CEOs who have worked with the company for 30 years and more. For its efforts, Royal Plaza on Scotts has been awarded the coveted #1 Best Workplace in Singapore and in Asia, by Great Place to Work® Singapore.

It has been an eventful and colourful journey, and as the hotel celebrates its 50th anniversary, Royal Plaza on Scotts is proud to renew its commitment to providing its signature brand of thoughtful, warm hospitality to its guests and the community.

To commemorate the milestone, Royal Plaza on Scotts has commissioned a series of comic strips illustrating the ‘RP Story’ which will be on display at the hotel as part of the celebrations. In addition, three photo spots have also been set-up around the hotel, comprising of installations inspired by the stay experience. Guests are encouraged to explore each photo spot and share their pictures to their social media platforms to win hotel stays and dining experiences.
